BIOGRAPHY

Laura El-Tantawy is an Egyptian photographer living between Cairo and London. She was born in Worcestershire, England to Egyptian parents & grew up between Saudi Arabia & Egypt. She is a graduate of the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia (USA) with a dual degree journalism & political science.

El-Tantawy started her career as a newspaper photographer with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel & Sarasota Herald-Tribune (USA) & later became freelance so she could pursue personal projects. She is an alumnus of Reflexions Masterclass, a two-year photography seminar directed by renowned Italian photographer Giorgia Fiorio & French curator Gabriel Bauret.

El-Tantawy’s photographic interest lies in exploring social & political issues, particularly those pertaining to her background.

In 2005 she started work on her first book exploring the identity & change facing her native Egypt. As part of the urge to understand the issues, in 2010, she accepted a six-month fellowship at the University of Oxford (UK) to research & write about freedom of expression under the government of former President Hosni Mubarak & the role played by Internet blogging & independent newspapers in pushing the boundaries of free speech. Her work has been published & exhibited in the United States, Europe, Asia & the Middle East & has been recognized across several international awards, including Social Documentary.net (Finalist 2012), FotoVisura Grant (Top Finalist 2011), Lens Culture International Exposure Awards (HM 2011), Prix Bayeux-Calvados des Correspondants de Guerre (Finalist 2011), Ian Parry Scholarship (Finalist 2011), BURN magazine Emerging Photographer Fund (Finalist 2011), Review Santa Fe (Selected 2011), Visura Spotlight Grant (Finalist 2010), Photocrati Fund (Finalist 2010).
