General Ray Odierno is the Commanding General in Iraq, Multi-National Corps - Iraq (MNF-I), credited as a key architect in the surge strategy that has moved Iraq closer to peace. Odierno assumed his current position on Sept. 16, 2008, replacing General David Petraeus as top U.S military commander in Iraq, after having served as Lieutenant General for nearly four years. The general faces numerous challenges in the fragile country, including maintaining and building upon the improving conditions, supervising cease-fires and mediating escalating tensions among Iraq's Sunni and Shiite populations.
