One Camera, One Lens

June 6 - June 10

The Leica Akademie USA and Leica Store San Francisco will hold a week-long workshop with documentary photographer and filmmaker Danny Wilcox Frazier from June 6 – 10, 2017.

Developing visual narratives and photo essays is at the foundation of traditional documentary photography. This workshop provides the opportunity to develop a photo essay from beginning to end under the guidance of Danny Wilcox Frazier.

Danny will share the lessons he has learned from over 20 years as a working photographer. This is a rare opportunity to learn first-hand from a working professional and educator who is dedicated to long term projects and renowned for his ability to capture intimate and emotional stories.

Over the course of five days’ students will learn how to become better storytellers, developing an initial concept into a finished slideshow.

Topics covered include:

  • Finding and developing a visual story?
  • Gaining access
  • Common roadblocks and how to overcome them
  • Working with themes
  • Creating images with impact
  • Developing long term projects

Workshop concept:

Timed to coincide with the west coast debut of Driftless, Danny’s long term project on Iowa and his newest project, Bury me not on the Lone Prairie, the concept for this workshop was born out of Danny’s personal experiences producing content for major publications around the world.

At the very start of the program a number of approaches to creating documentary narrative storytelling projects will be shared with students. Students are encouraged to determine their subjects or area of interest, before the first day of the workshop.

Once registered, we will work with you to develop your topic. Project topics can vary dramatically from person to person. Subject matter students are personally connected to or situations that you have access to are often good places to start in creating stories and images uniquely your own.

Students are encouraged to consider not only the technical aspects of creating picture stories and gaining access, but also the trust, ethics and relationships involved in documentary projects.

The format of the workshop is intensive and requires independent shooting. The group will gather daily from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for review and critique. This will leave the afternoon and evenings for shooting.

Final projects will be shared in a public slideshow and reception at the conclusion of the workshop, Saturday June 10th.
