VII Mentor Program photographer Sim Chi Yin has been recognized as one of PDN’s 30 New and Emerging Photographers to Watch in 2013. Sim was a journalist and foreign correspondent for The Straits Times, Singapore’s national English language daily, for nine years before leaving to start a career in photography. She won a Magnum Foundation Fellowship in 2010, which helped her complete her widely published “Rat Tribe” project, about the low-wage workers from rural areas of China living in Beijing’s dank basements. Sim was admitted to the VII Mentor Program in 2011, and works regularly for the New York Times.
