Anti-Aristide rebels began to take revenge on his supporters after Aristide's departure, leading to the execution of chimeres, members of the pro-Aristide gangs, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, March 3, 2004. After the controversial election of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide in 2000, Haiti's population divided into pro- and anti-Aristide factions, leading to conflicts in February 2004 between rebel groups and armed gangs supported by Aristide's government, after which Aristide ceded power to the rebels in late February 2004, a move believed by many to be pressured by the American government, and US marines arrived in the country to restore peace.
