About the project:

“For the past few years, I’ve been trying to work out where I’ve “come from”, where our family’s roots are.

I’ve discovered chapters of our family history and my link to a not-so-distant chapter of China’s history: my paternal grandfather returned to China from Malaya to fight and die in the Chinese Communist revolution in 1949, a generation after great-granddad left from this jetty (pictured) in east Guangdong to escape those impoverished mountains across the river, sailing from Swatow (Shantou) to Malaya.

My family’s story is a small slice of the history of the Hakkas and the overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia and China. In every diaspora family, there’s perhaps a similar story awaiting unearthing…

Join us for a vignette of the story I’m working on, at this launch of a zine with 15 images from this on-going project: 5 September, 3pm, in Singapore, at the Esplanade’s Jendela Visual Arts space, where the Twentyfifteen.sg group show is also on.”
